Hook positions and hook shapes of latch needles
The different hook positions are designated with the numbers 1-4 and a small letter c.
Straight hook:
Bottom side of the throat and bottom side of the needle form a continuous line.
This is the standard version.
This hook shape is used mainly in flat knitting machines and double section circular knitting machines.
Hook between straight and central:
This hook position is approximately in the middle of 1 (straight hook) and 3 (central hook).Due to the slightly raised hook position, the thread can be caught better by the hook. This position is used in single section circular knitting machines.

Central hook:
This hook position is slightly more raised, so that the middle of the throat is central with the cheek. This means the threads are caught better. This shape is also used in single section circular knitting machines and in striping machines. This geometry is particularly suitable for color changes, as it ensures that the threads in striping machines are caught.
Forward hook:
The top side of the throat and the cheek form a continuous line. The purpose of this hook, which is very raised at the throat, is to ensure the threads are inserted well. This needle geometry is used mainly in machines with a higher number of feeders and in small circular kniting machines, in other words, in machines in which there is not much room available for thread insertion between the different knitting points (plating machines).
Forward slanting hook:
With this hook position, the bottom side of the throat is at an angle to the bottom side of the needle. This hook is bent upwards. In combination with a plating hook, it is ideal for floating(missing). This position is used mainly in fine gauge hosiery machines.
